Chinese Archaistic Style Bronze Ritual Fang Ding Vessel, 20th Century

A fine and imposing Chinese bronze vessel of fang ding form — the square ritual cauldron shape originating in the celebrated Shang dynasty bronzes of ancient China (c. 1600–1046 BC). Each of the four principal panels bears a boldly modelled taotie mask — the mysterious frontal face motif that has fascinated scholars and collectors for centuries.  

Corner flanges with C-scroll relief, four sturdy cylindrical legs with further taotie ornament, and square loop handles rising from the flat rim complete the composition.

The vessel carries a deep black-green patina of great richness and depth, consistent with quality bronze casting of the Republican or mid-20th century period. A piece of real scholarly presence and decorative authority — equally at home displayed alone or as a planter or vessel for dried flowers and foliage.
